Messi lifted his shirt to reveal the red and black Newells jersey, which Maradona wore during his time at the Argentine club between 1993 and 1994. The Barcelona star's gesture was met with applause from the crowd and his teammates.
"It was a very special moment," Messi said after the game. "I had always wanted to wear the Newells shirt because my dad played there. It was a dream come true."
Maradona, who died of a heart attack in November 2020, is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time. He led Argentina to victory at the 1986 World Cup and was also instrumental in Napoli's Serie A title triumph in 1987.
