Breaking: Vancouver Faces High Risk of Devastating Earthquake

9.0 Magnitude Megathrust Quake Predicted off Vancouver Island

New Study Highlights BC's Seismic Vulnerability

Vancouver and Vancouver Island are at high risk of a catastrophic earthquake, according to a new study. The study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, found that a 9.0-magnitude megathrust earthquake is likely to occur off the coast of Vancouver Island in the next 50 years.

The earthquake would be caused by the release of energy from the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate, which is slowly moving beneath the North American plate. The collision of these two plates has created a geological fault line that is known as the Cascadia subduction zone.

The last major earthquake in the Cascadia subduction zone occurred in 1700, and it caused a tsunami that devastated the coast of Washington and Oregon. Scientists believe that a similar earthquake could occur at any time, and it could have a devastating impact on Vancouver and Vancouver Island.
